Study Guide Review

Another major education publisher, McGraw Hill, has recently released an updated 2014 edition of its GED prep book.

What makes this guide so popular is its gradual approach. Step by step, readers are eased into the substance of each topic that comprises the GED. Even those with little prior knowledge will find it enjoyable and manageable to use this book. Nevertheless, at 992 pages, this book is thorough and even more voluminous than the other comprehensive guides – such as Kaplan’s or Peterson’s – on our list of the best GED prep books.

In addition to more traditional subject matter coverage, Preparation for the GED Test contains strategic advice on how to tackle the test, numerous helpful quizzes, and 1,000+ practice questions with detailed and thoughtful explanations. The book also features two realistic full-length practice tests covering all subject areas, Language Arts, Reading and Writing; Mathematics; Science; and Social Studies. Although overall a strong and near-complete book, McGraw Hill’s guide shines particularly in the math sections. Here, Preparation for the GED Test is leading the pack and those struggling with this aspect of the test are well advised to consult this guide, by itself or in addition to other study aids.

In sum, this comprehensive GED study guide is up to date, helpful, thorough, and – last but not least – great value for money.
